Saturday night’s alright for fighting
Big day yesterday. It was the Child’s actual 8th birthday, though festivities continue today. Friday afternoon her mother and I took her to see Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit at the little neighborhood theater down in Sellwood. It was scarier than we realized — to the Child, I mean, her mother and I were both inside the jokes — and I was a little disappointed in the humor. Aardman Americanized the script, with a number of outbreaks of double-entendre at odds with the sort of sweet innocence of the short features from years past, which had a different sense of humor. This was a little rougher and cruder. Also shared the problem I had with Chicken Run, which was that (presumably for reasons of cost control) the movie was animated at about half the frame rate of the short features. Made it look herky jerky to me, like I was looking at something filmed under a strobe light.
Saturday morning I took her to breakfast at the Original Hotcake House, a Portland institution she happens to love dearly and which is two blocks from Rancho Lake. Afterward I wanted to go over to New Seasons on Division St. to buy goodies for a party (with potluck) I was going to that night, and the Child suggested walking. “I don’t walk enough,” she said quite seriously. “I want to be strong and go hiking in the summer.” So we walked over, taking photos of graffiti and street art as we went.
A bit later I loaded up and headed out for lunch with Ken Scholes, after which Ken, David Goldman, Stephen Stanley and I made our book signings at the Borders stores in Gresham and over the river in Vancouver, WA. That was fun, sold a few things, had an unexpected visit from
I left there at 5:30, raced down to Flying Pie, a righteously excellent pizza joint a few miles from my house, where
Once that finished up, I swung the Child home and headed off for my late party, an adult Halloween party which was — to say the least — high energy.
It made for a very long day, 8 am to 1 am essentially. But I had a great time, and am being (mostly) low energy today. The Child has her girls-from-school party this afternoon, where I am assisting with wrangling of screaming second graders. Afterwards I’m in an editing and writing mode.
