Halloweenies

So the Child, her mother and I dressed up and went off to the class thing. It wasn’t a formal school event, just some of the parents pulling together some of the kids. The Child went as Super Bat and I was Bert the Wizard of Dirt.

The Child’s name for her costume led to this exchange at the party:

“Guess what kind of bat I am!”
“Vampire bat!”
“No.”
“Fruit bat!”
“No.”
“Vegetable bat!”

Bert, of course, is a character from my story “The River Knows Its Own”. I’m wearing my Mongolian dhel, and the top hat that gave me at BayCon this last year, with dark glasses as a nod to Baron Saturday.

At the host’s house, they’d set up this little playlet thing, the six stations of the season or something. Six fires, each with an adult acting out a role — a candlestick maker, an apple seller, a banker, a farmer, a baker, then me, the wizard, guarding the change of seasons. It was sort of odd and a lot of fun, and the kids loved it. Afterward we went trick or treating on the street.

Now my throat is killing me and I’m tired and I didn’t get any writing done, but it was a good Halloween with the Child.
