Political snark

In the last two days I’ve heard various Republican figures on the radio (including Bill Frist and the Governor of Minnesota) intoning about the rule of law and how important it is that we not create a culture of disrespect for the law. This in connection to the immigration debate. As I recall, the rule of law was also very important to these people during the Clinton impeachment.

In an era of Bush flat out stating he violated FISA, and all the other issues around this administration’s violations of law both flagrant (Valerie Plame) and subtle (I don’t have several hours to list them out), how can any Republican talk about the sanctity of law with a straight face?

(And to my conservative friends who happen to read this, I’m perfectly clear that hypocrisy isn’t limited to one political party. However, since modern Republican fortunes are built in part on being identified as the party of ethics and good government, I think they have some responsibility for consistency. Besides, they’re in charge, so they get to take the heat.)
