Pirates then and now — Comparing modern Somali pirates to the eighteenth century Caribbean.

How to destroy the Earth — Money shot: “Creating a microscopic black hole is tricky, since one needs a reasonable amount of neutronium, but may possibly be achievable by jamming large numbers of atomic nuclei together until they stick. This is left as an exercise to the reader.” Hahahahahahaha. For all you mad scientists and end-of-days disaster writers. (Hat tip to Bad Astronomy Blog.)

Physical security maxims — From Argonne National Laboratory. Funny but not. (Thanks to danjite.)

Vaccination protestors in Portland — With a focus on the_child‘s school. Long time readers of this blog will recall this is a huge hot button for me. Under Oregon law, we had to file a vaccination waiver for her, since we do not have medical records from China indicating whether she was vaccinated in infancy. There is no other class of exemption — either produce proof of vaccination or file a religious waiver. Oregon law simply does not contemplate the possibility of genuinely undocumented children. But I am very strongly against vaccination protestors on both moral grounds and public health grounds. Cooling climate ‘consensus’ of 1970s never was — Research that discredits a key pillar of global warming denialism on the face of the data. (Thanks to lt260.)

What’s the difference between Palin and Muslim fundamentalists? Lipstick — Juan Cole in Salon on democratic values, tolerance, and religious codes in society. Ah, the irony.

Making Light on last night’s debate — Hahahahahahahah. I cannot stop laughing at this.
