[politics] Vote

If you’re a US citizen (and for you smart asses, haven’t already voted), go do it now.

Whether you did it today or early, leave a comment here about why you voted. I’m curious what my non-American readers think, too. Not snark or argument — I happily host plenty of that on this blog as it is, and may moderate accordingly on this thread — just your own thoughts on voting.

I voted because I’m a veteran, and “protecting and defending the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic” requires participating in the constitutional process.

Plus, I spent a lot of time in, and relating to, nations that do not have even as free a voting system as we’ve got here… and it’s truly scary. It’s scary like not getting a pertussis immunization: Until you’ve seen a roomful of kids with whooping cough and seen the dead ones carted out a week later, you may not have the ability to make the cold, hard, rational call.

I will be voting not so much for Obama as in hope of genuine change away from this long slide into darkness.

I voted because I’m an American and I can’t complain if I don’t do something about it.

I’m watching from Belgium, hoping that Obama will win, and the current utter disdain for diplomatic solutions, and the international community in general will slowly ebb away from US foreign policy.

That would make me less worried about the state of the world… Not least because the US (still, despite everything) stands for democracy, and as millions of people around the world have come to despise the US for the actions of its leaders they have turned away from democracy and civil rights as well.

My wife and I voted. In protest, sort of. I think the two party system is a big reason why we’re having such a tough time addressing common-sense problems, like the economic mini-disaster. So my wife and I were contrarians. No votes for Obama. No votes for McCain either. Both men are probably good men. Neither of them convinced us.

Now, it seems, Obama will get his chance. I wish him well, because if he does well so will the country. I don’t drink haterade. I hope lots of others who didn’t vote for Obama, will also give him a chance. Every President deserves it. Hating on the man, before he’s had his moment to sink or swim, seems like the worst kind of partisan politics.

    JMHO.
