Speaking of which, while I like the camel effect, I agree, that whole practice is just wrong. Then again, when I look back at how my parents used to dress me, it has much the same flavor.
As to Melville, may one ask why you’re forcing yourself to read it when you so patently don’t like how it’s written? There are any number of other picaresques to enjoy.
