September 15th, 2009 at 3:51 pmThat’s very beautiful.
Is that a ruined church and if so, what happened? In Europe, gutted church ruins are either the result of WWII bombings or destruction attempts of rival religions/ideologies, but neither makes much sense for the US.

September 15th, 2009 at 3:53 pmActually, they’re bridge piers, made with that Gothic arch.

September 15th, 2009 at 7:45 pmThat’s where the cultural disconnect comes in. When I see an image like that, I immediately think “gutted church or abbey”. I’ve just noticed that the caption actually says “bridge”, but I must have read right past it.
Talking of bridges, I assume that this is the bridge which featured quite prominently in Devon Monk’s “Magic to the Bone”, which is set in an (alternate universe) Portland. Good to finally have a visual for it.
