[publishing] The world without you
Happy 80th birthday, Ursula K. Le Guin.
I don’t know what our genre would be without you, but certainly it would have been far less rich and exciting.

October 22nd, 2009 at 11:07 pmI have a funny story about Ms LeGuin… When I moved to Oregon 5 yrs ago, there was a book fair in the convention center…. Knowing she was going to be there, I just HAD to go meet her…. So, off we go. I stand in line for about 15 minutes, with James, who is watching me closely, a fact of which I was totally unaware… It’s my turn. I begin to tell her of how much I have always enjoyed her books, and how, as a preteen, her writings guided my difficult life… When I surprised myself by breaking into tears and huge sobs. I could NOT gain control of my emotions. (I’m known to be rather in control of such things;)) I’m not entirely sure of what happened after that. I vaguely remember James talking to a very puzzled author…
Well, I DO enjoy her work
and no, I don’t make a habit of crying my eyes out. I shook the hand of Brian Froud several years ago and even had a very relaxed, nice conversation with him; he’s one of my fave artists.
To this day, she prob wonders about that crazy woman…
