The Pinion cover is made public — It’s lovely. I am terribly pleased.

commits glory — Go read. It’s only a few sentences long.

Why handwriting is history — The handwritten scoring on the SATs would have sunk me as a kid. I routinely placed in 99.9th percentile, but my handwriting is so atrocious…

Santa awing — A funny classic photo from x-planes.

The capitol subway, 1915 — Speaking of funny, classic photos. This one from Shorpy.

A solstice sunriseAPOD with one of those images that just suckers me in. The solstice sun, rising behind the Temple of Poseidon.

Titan’s Lakes, An Exoplanet’s Seas — More from Centauri Dreams. Money shot: If mapping the continents on planets around other stars doesn’t rouse your interest, you may not be paying attention

The Oral Tradition — Phil Nugent with a fascinating take on Oral Roberts, televangelism and the American Right. (Snurched from The Edge of the American West.)

?otD: Is it beginning to look a lot like Festivus?

Lovely cover that even tops the previous two.

Regarding handwriting, I think longhand will be with us for a while and that’s a good thing, because there always are times when you have to jot down something, yet a computer, etc… isn’t around.

However, the practice of linking neat handwriting with intelligence and moral character really deserves to be thrown onto the scrapheap of history ASAP. Neat handwriting is just that, neat handwriting. It doesn’t mean that someone is smart or a good person or anything. My handwriting is pretty scrawly and I have suffered the prejudices of parents and educators still brought up in the age of neat handwriting. It was also a problem at school, since we were graded on the neatness of our notes and exercise materials. Moreover, I was threatened that I would have problems getting a job, because I would never pass the graphology tests that were standard procedure in my parents’ day. And apparently, there still are companies that demand a graphology test from a potential employee – a friend of mine had to provide a writing sample.

Regarding Oral Roberts, I think it says a lot about the US that I had to check twice whether I was truly reading about a real person and not a Simpsons character.

Many of us in the US have the same reaction to Oral Roberts…
