[publishing] Hello? Amazon? Is this thing on?

No new wisdom on Amazon, Macmillan or ebooks today, but I still haven’t seen any public statements from Amazon beyond the original, laughable unsigned note on the Kindle boards. The media lovefeast for them goes on of course, albeit tapering off now, with the Amazon-biased “price increase” narrative almost completely dominant.

Did I miss something? I still wonder if this round is over.

It may have been that I frequent more writing sites than “media”… but I’ve really not seen much Amazon love on this. I wouldn’t expect an official Amazon word on this for some time… especially with Hachette and HarperCollins both having said they’d like to go to a similar model, I doubt Amazon wants to risk screwing up their position in those negotiations by divulging any more information to the public than they have to at this point.

There’s a lengthy and, on the whole, approving article in the Financial Times, which is a British newspaper equivalent to the Wall St Journal. There’s the occasional howler (e-books are said to have zero marginal costs) but for the most part it’s a solid analysis.

The FT is important because the readership demographic is at the ‘people who make decisions’ end of the continuum; it always helps if those decision makers come away with the view that Macmillan has a workable strategy to keep itself in business. That in turn helps Macmillan’s authors, which is the vital bit!

Well apparently Random House is OK with the $9.99 price point.

It will be interesting to see what the other big publishing houses decide to do, I have a feeling your going to see the companies who dont push for equivalent ebook to physical book pricing will have higher sales and in the end make more money off of ebooks AND “dead tree” books as well thanks to word of mouth from ebook readers.(most of the books i read are ones people recommend to me)
