Obama orders most hospitals to grant gays visitation rights — Sometimes the right thing is the right thing.
The View From Movement-World — Conservative commentator Daniel Larison on the “cocooning” of the conservative mind, with attention to the memory hole. (As I’ve commented before, I suspect Larison and I don’t agree on very many points of politics or policy, but I respect his intellectual honesty and careful thinking.)
Tea party activists protest excessive taxation, government spending in D.C. — Which would make more sense, if, you know, 98% of Americans hadn’t already seen their taxes reduced under Obama. But conservatives never were much for letting facts get in the way of their opinions. Besides, he’s a secret Muslin Socialist, so it must all be true.
Have Republicans Been Out-Foxed? — Some conservatives are beginning to question whether Fox News is good for their movement. This is hilarious: Bartlett wonders if ultimately “an inherent conflict of interest is growing, in which the very success of Fox makes it harder for Republicans to get out of the echo chamber, to have arguments that go beyond their base, and to reach out to independents and Democrats who might vote for them.” No. You think? Liberal bias, obviously.
O’Reilly lies to Coburn: ‘Nobody’s ever said’ at Fox you’ll go to jail if you don’t buy health insurance. Oh yes they have. — Shockingly, someone at FOX significantly misrepresented the truth. Equally shockingly, the sun rose in the east this morning. They distort, I deride.

April 16th, 2010 at 4:47 amGood news from the deep south: our local tax-day tea party rally was significantly reduced in attendance from last year. By a number of 5-digits (which is roughly the number of digits that attended last year) such that this year they could easily measure the number of attendees with only 4 digits and plenty of room to spare.
Honestly, I think that’s encouraging!

April 16th, 2010 at 3:39 pmVery shortly after September 11th, 2001, Fox News appeared on the Astra Satellite, which services most of Europe. And given the date, I sincerely doubt that was a coincidence.
A lot of viewers were utterly baffled by this new channel (I was one of them) and finally came to the conclusion that it had to be a parody of American news channels like CNN, because the program was so preposterous it couldn’t possibly be serious.
Fox News vanished from the programming list after six months or so, never to resurface again. It’s hard to infect people with your venom and lies, when they think your program is a clever parody.
The highest altitude I’ve ever been was at Stilfser Joch/Passo dello Stelvio, the second highest paved Alpine pass at 2757 meters (a little over 9000 feet). Very alien landscape up there. Even better, at the end of the pass there is Bormio, a spa and skiing resort in the Italian alps with fabulous food and – at least when I was there – a free open air performance by the famous La Montanara choir.

April 16th, 2010 at 3:44 pmStilfser Joch/Passo dello Stelvio is located directly at the border between the German and Italian speaking parts of North Italy (and Raeto-Romanic on the Swiss side, too), so it has two names in two languages. It is famous for its hairpin curves and popular among motorbikers and drivers who enjoy roads of that kind.
