June 17th, 2010 at 8:05 pmAs a linguist of sorts, the comments on the article on language extinction make me angry. A language is not an obsolete operating system or software package nor is it just a communication system. Language is culture and a way of looking at the world.
I guess those commenters are also the sort of people who think it’s perfectly okay when an immigrant kid no longer knows the native language of its parents.
