July 9th, 2010 at 6:17 amWow, have I missed a “Hey, let’s all pile on an established writer and attack him/her” kerfuffle in the SFF community? I usually keep an eye on those things, though I don’t get involved. Still sorry to see that the vitriolic elements in the online SFF community have now managed to get the better even of Harlan Ellison.
Shoes: By the standard of western women, I don’t have a whole lot of shoes and I usually wear them, until they fall apart, because I hate shoe shopping and have problems finding shoes that fir properly.

July 9th, 2010 at 6:22 amI’m not sure what the ultimate point of dissing Harlan was. Kristian voiced their objections to that differently than I might have, but the dogpile phenomenon is all too well known in our community, and seems largely rooted in the aspirational frustrations of people lack either empathy or impulse control or both.

July 9th, 2010 at 4:31 pmI agree that aspirational frustrations lie at the root of many of the recent flamewars in the SFF community, even though they often masquerade as something else. There are probably also similar frustrations at the heart of the ongoing conflict of fanfiction writers versus professional writers.
But the extreme ugliness of those conflicts seems to be a feature particular to the SFF community. Because when you look at other genre communities (the romance community is a good example), you get the same amount of aspiring and professional writers and you get conflicts, but not nearly the same level of ugliness as in the SFF community.

July 10th, 2010 at 6:18 amWell, yeah… I have trouble distinguishing different Slavic accents in English from one another (which has occasionally landed me in hot water), but confusing Russian and Portuguese?
