Senator Lies About RoommateI don’t get this argument that extending unemployment benefits prevents people from taking jobs. The only people who could possibly think unemployment benefits incentivize the unemployed to remain jobless are those who have never tried to survive on the very meager funds paid out. Or idiots. Or both. It’s a deeply specious argument made from the ignorance of privilege and some very flawed assumptions about the working class and the poor.

I’m Telling You, Palin Has No Chance — Conservative commentator Daniel Larison on Palin in 2012. We have already given one obviously unqualified Western governor a chance to wreck the country in the last decade, and not even the Republican Party that continues to defend and like Bush is so clueless and self-destructive that it would go to the country with a female version of the disaster we just experienced

Here’s what I’ll say about unemployment benefits: They prevented me from taking jobs that paid less than they paid. IE, $375/week. But honest truth is that there aren’t even many of those. I looked for linecook jobs while I was on unemployment – nada. I looked for local freelance computer work that paid at least minimum wage (that I could do – I am not a programmer) – nada. It says something that the closest job I could find was a 2 hour commute away.

There are people who will milk their unemployment benefits for every cent possible as a way to avoid having to go back to work. I wrote about one here:

But there are so few such people that it’s pretty dumb to make public policy decisions with them in mind. It’d be like changing building codes to require every house in the Midwest to be tornado-proof (rather than just having basements and insurance).

I’ve also heard conservatives argue that higher tax rates on those with the highest incomes make some people not try to make more money (thus losing the government income). I’ve never seen a rich conservative GOP type not try to make more money when they could!

The thing about Sarah Palin is that she thinks she has a chance, and the TP’ers are stupid enough to agree. All I can say is, “Oh please, oh please!”
