What always gets me about the same sex marriage conflict in the US is the insistence of its opponents that marriage has always been defined as a union between a man and a woman.

Sorry, folks, but I have never defined marriage that way. The most common definition in Germany, most common because it occurs in every second crossword puzzle, is simply “life union”. And if pressed to give a more detailed definition, I would define marriage as a “union between two people who are in love” and that’s also the definition I would have given as a child, partly inspired by a truly clever and subversive bit of kids TV.
