yuki_onna on the glamour of being a writer at an overseas con — As has oft been observed, one of the paradoxes of developing a meaningful writing career is that the issues which are problematic to the writer begin to seem ever more odd to non-writers.
Detective Storytelling — Art guru James Gurney deconstructs the narrative of a painting. As a writer, I use narrative to create pictures. I love this kind of parallax view of the creative process.

September 3rd, 2010 at 6:46 pmRegarding the post by Catherynne Valente, when I told an acquaintance that I was traveling to an academic conference, he said, “Enjoy your holiday!”
Me: “It’s not a holiday, actually, it’s work. Though I hope to sneak of for an hour or so to take a look at the host city.”
Acquaintance: “So how much are they paying you for going to that conference?”
Me: “Nothing. In fact, I’m paying for the privilege of attending.”
Acquaintance: “But why do you go to such conferences, if there’s no money in it?”
Me: “You go to conferences for the academic honour. And to make contacts that may advance your career one day.”
At least, he did get the latter.
I imagine it’s even more difficult to convince people that attending an SF convention with lots of parties, colourfully costumed people and more or less famous guests is actually work and quite strenuous at that.
