Is it mean to say that I find it comforting that US immigration and passport control officers treat US citizens returning from abroad just as badly as non-US-citizens entering the country? And asking a returning citizen what he or she was doing abroad is very odd? I have never been asked such a question upon reentering Germany or the EU.

Honestly, what is it with US border officials? They’re about as pleasant to deal with as the border guards in Communist East Germany and that’s saying something. Interesting also that female officers seem to be worse than male officers, because that pattern was well known in East Germany, too.
