The Price of Steampunkery — Interesting thoughts on sustainability and society in a steampunk context.

The Brave New World of Today’s Music Professional — To quote Scrivener’s Error, “This piece in the San Francisco Classical Voice advocating that to make a living, “classical” musicians must diversify their output should create some interesting resonances for authors.” (Via, um, Scrivener’s Error.)

Is It Time for an Oil Change in the Kitchen? — Interesting New York Times article on cooking oils. Though I wonder a bit about the author’s testing methodology, as heating oil alone in a pan has to produce a different result than heating oil with something in it, for various physical and chemical reasons. George H.W. Bush to Get Medal of FreedomPresident Obama will present the Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, to former president George H. W. Bush Republicans honor Democratic presidents with impeachments. Democrats… This about makes me done with Obama, I think.

New [Arkansas] state rep: Confederate flag ‘a symbol of Jesus Christ.’When asked what the Confederate flag symbolizes, Mauch said: “It’s a symbol of constitutional government. It’s a symbol of Jesus Christ above all else. It’s a symbol of Biblical government.” Are you proud of your Republican party? This is what you get when you vote GOP: empowerment of deranged clowns like this guy.

  1. Michael says:

Re cooking oil: typically, by the time you add food to oil, it has already been brought to temperature – there for the effects of the oil on the taste of food cooked have to be judged by that. The effects of food on the taste of oil all come after the oil has been denatured by heat.

I, for one, would never use extra virgin olive oil for anything but flavoring. It’s too expensive, and refined olive oils have the same oil characteristics, but a higher smoke point, making them better for high heat applications. The only thing that makes extra virgin olive oil taste like it does is the olive solids that it retains – and those burn at a relatively low temp.

And, if I understand it correctly, H.W. is being honored for his charity work with Bill Clinton – besides, even at his most bankrupt, HW was never as bad as Reagon or W.
