Teaching, the most important professionAn average high school graduate has spent 10,000 hours at school in the company of 20 teachers. It’s no wonder almost everyone has a story about a teacher who changed his or her life.

States of educational decayYou know what happens when you cut education in your state? Businesses may start to leave. Ahem, the “Nukes turned Mars red” article is from the Daily Mail, a rag not exactly known for accurate reporting. Though it would make a nice background detail for an ancient Mars story.

The German government spokesman making announcements via Twitter has made such huge waves in Germany that I haven’t even heard about this alleged “affair” in the German news. I’m not surprised that some older journalists have issues with Twitter, though. Which government spokesman Steffen Seibert should have known, considering that he used to be a political journalist himself until a few months ago.

Thanks for the appreciation of teachers, BTW. Here in Germany, the anti-teacher hostility is not as strongly developed as in the US, but we have many of the same issues such as a certain type of parent sending their children to private schools, which are often religiously affiliated and not necessarily better than public schools, as well as a widespread belief that teachers are lazy. Former Chancellor Schröder called publicly teachers lazy, while some woman wrote a book entitled “The Teacher Hate Book” (she believes all teachers are mentally ill and enjoy tormenting children). I don’t want to imagine the uproar, if Schröder had called e.g. nurses lazy and that woman had written “The Plumber Hate Book”.
