[personal] Saturday – a movie and a banquet

Well, my calendar yesterday had largely been devoted to sleeping and vomiting. Given Friday’s chemofail, the day opened up nicely. scarlettina had come down to be my primary caregiver, but stayed for the company. So she and I and the_child went to see Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides in the company of davidlevine and kateyule, followed by a reasonable Thai lunch at Racha. (I like Pok Pok better.)

The lunch was reasonable but I had mixed reactions to the movie. The first Pirates of the Caribbean succeeded because it was utterly unselfconscious, and witty as hell. The interplay between Jack Sparrow and Hector Barbossa was genius. The second movie failed utterly as much for the lack of that pairing as anything else. I was entertained by the third movie, though it didn’t succeed for me as well as the first. In this new, fourth installment, they’ve somehow managed to drain the life out of Barbossa (so to speak, he’s already been dead once) and eliminate that spark of wit that carried the first and third movies. And the plot was kind of goofy and circular. Plus I’m pretty sure the Fountain of Youth was in Florida, and I’m pretty sure Florida doesn’t have craggy volcanic peaks and sea caves. But hey, maybe that’s just me.

Later in the day, scarlettina drove me to my father and (step)mother’s 40th wedding anniversary party. This was also attended by the_child and Mother of the Child, as well as lillypond (a/k/a my sister) and the Niece, my brother who’d flown in from Virginia and my aunt and uncle from Texas. My parents hosted us in a banquet pavilion at the Portland Classical Chinese Garden, with a lovely catered Chinese dinner, and J—, a very lovely woman who is a docent at the Garden. She gave us a private tour and accompany us at dinner. I’ll post photos later.

Today I am taking advantage of my continued schedule of consciousness and not throwing up to accomplish some lingering items of household management. Later, the_child and I will attend a much more casual lunch with the rest of the extended family.

For now, be well and do good. That’s my plan for the day, and hopefully yours.
