Amid Rise of Multiculturalism, Dutch Confront Their Questions of Identity

What Obama Can Learn From Harry Truman

Who’s Really Responsible For U.S. Debt Downgrade — The GOP is now pretending that they never said default was no big deal. As usual, Your Liberal Media is dutifully reporting the latest GOP talking points as if they were true. Here’s a bunch of Republican pols on the record.

Is Rick Perry a ’sucker,’ or was he just lying? It seems far likelier, in other words, that Rick Perry didn’t get suckered by this urban legend, but was retelling it to his audience in order to sucker them — to sucker them into supporting his candidacy, to sucker them into thinking that government is always their enemy, and to sucker them into thinking that unfettered, unregulated giant corporations are their friends.

The rightward shift in the Netherlands is not exactly news – Pym Fortuyn was spreading his hate mongering even before September 11th, 2001.

Having spent a lot of time in the Netherlands as a teenager, I find this very troubling, because I was very happy there (living in the center of a multicultural city) and I hate to see the country turn away from what made it such a great place to be.

During my last visit to the Netherlands after several years away, I was stunned to see how much the country had changed. A lot of people refused to speak anything but Dutch, including bank clerks (my Dutch is passable for everyday interactions, but not good enough for bank business), and that in a country where almost everybody speaks English and/or German in addition to Dutch.

    re: Netherlands:

72.9% of the US is ethnically white, meaning 27% is minority and growing. ~9% of Netherlands according to recent survey is non-native, with roughly half that being non-native Europeans (in other words, other white immigrants). So they’re ready to run back into the arms of fascism due to having a 4-5% minority population.

    Color me unimpressed.

The demographic figures I’ve seen for the Netherlands are approx. 80% European Dutch, approx. 10% other Europeans and approx. 10% people of non-European origin. The Netherlands have a lot of immigrants from their former colonies, mostly Indonesians as well as Surinamese and people from the Antilles. Because these people or their parents were Dutch subjects when they immigrated, some surveys don’t count them as people of non-European origin (e.g. Wikipedia counts Indonesians as Europeans for some reason). However, they’re not white and the Indonesians are Muslim or Buddhist, so racists still see them as foreigners.

Besides, the Netherlands is very densely populated (400 people per square kilometres) and most of the population live in cities, so people of colour are more visible.

None of this excuses the racism and hate propaganda by people like Geert Wilders (and others, including a Jewish writer who sprouts anti-Muslim rhetoric, i.e. someone whose ancestors profited from multiculturalism speaking out against it), especially as some 5 or 6 percent of Muslims are not going to take over anything. Besides – and this is was bothers me most – the Netherlands was a functioning multicultural society twenty years ago, so why should that suddenly change.
