What’s the language of the future?

Healthcare Needs Insurance Companies Like a Fish Needs a Bicycle — Single payer has its issues, but the current system is rife with problems.

‘Pristine’ gas from early universe discovered — A dish of partially-eaten beans was discovered nearby.

NASA’s Newest Mars Rover Prepares For Close-UpCuriosity, scheduled to land on the Red Planet in August, will try to determine if conditions were ever favorable to support microbial life.

‘Report any suspicion of the abuse of a child to law enforcement authorities’Slacktivist Fred Clark with a roundup of link regarding the disgusting mess at Penn State.

In Shocking Twist No One Could Have Foreseen, Kochs’ Family Empire Founded on Government Handouts — If you don’t know who the Koch brothers are, spend 20 minutes with Google. Trust me on this.

Remains of war dead dumped in landfillThe mortuary in Delaware, the main point of entry for the nation’s war dead and the target of federal investigations of alleged mishandling of remains, engaged in the practice from 2003 to 2008, according to Air Force officials. The manner of disposal was not disclosed to relatives of fallen service members. Imagine if you will the reaction in the media, and on the radio and TV talk shows, if this had gone on during the Clinton or Obama administrations. We’d still be hearing the howls of condemnation. But Bush? No worries. The consistency fetishists on the Right will give this one a pass since no liberals were involved who can be punished through years of media harassment, I guarantee it.

I must say I’m getting very sick of this whole Globish crap, because the implication always is English will have to be simplified for international use, because those foreigners are too dumb to learn it properly. Which is bullshit, because English is really not that difficult to learn. Just because Americans and other native English speakers have problems learning foreign languages doesn’t mean that everybody else has problems as well.

About the Pennsylvania State University scandal, what strikes me most about this as someone from a different country with a different tradition is that apparently this university viewed itself less as an educational institution and more as a football club. I only heard of this Joe Paterno guy a few months back when self-publishing guru John Locke pointed out a blogpost of his praising Joe Paterno as the ideal post to win new readers for your book. My initial reaction was “Who the hell is Joe Paterno?” It’s also very disturbing if the most prominent person on a university campus is not a celebrated scholar or researcher but a football coach. Even more disturbing is that the university felt this coach had to be protected at all costs including downplaying the sexual abuse of children.
