A tiny bit more on sales

asked about what percentage of stories converted to sales. According to my records, I’ve done 406 first drafts since the beginning of 2001. About 30 of those are non-fiction piece or novels, so we’ll filter to 376 for discussion purposes. Filtering the same items from the sales numbers, I’ve had 180 short story sales in that period. (This doesn’t omit the multiple flash sales or non-genre sales.)

So over the past five years 44% of my short story first drafts have eventually converted to sales. I can do trend analysis if anyone really cares, but don’t have time for that right now.

ETA: Gross wordcounts, first draft only, are 956,800 words of short story/non fiction first draft, and 645,700 words of novel first draft.
