    Dairy consumption in China has been exploding for a while, partly due to official pushes and in spite of the widespread lactose intolerance in East Asia. In Europe there have been concerns about rising dairy prices due to increasing exports to China for a couple of years now. Of late, large quantities of milk powder for babies have been exported from Germany to China, often via expats shipping boxes of milk powder to relatives in China, because Chinese parents are justifiably concerned about tainted milk powder and thus prefer Western products deemed safe. So the California cheese is part of an ongoing issue.
