Roberts? In what fucking universe? The only reason the Chief Justice isn’t universally understood as a right wing ideologue who’s abandoned all intellectually honest jurisprudence and Constitutionality in favor of naked partisanship is that he sits next to Justices Scalia and Thomas. Those two ass clowns make Joe McCarthy look like a model of prudent bipartisanship. History is going to be very, very unkind to the Roberts Court, unless of course it’s written by Palinites. Which is clearly Roberts’ goal.

Regarding the SpongeBob gravestone, the reason I never want to be buried in a German cemetary is that our cemetaries are so reglemented that you can’t even have something innocuous like the praying hands by Dürer on your headstone (happened to my grandma), let alone SpongeBob.

Regarding T-Nehisi Coates, that’s a really disappointing article from him, never mind that he hasn’t even fully read the book he’s talking about, he just falls back into reflexive anti-German remarks (All Germany are Nazis and inherently evil) without a single clue. First of all, the persistence of former Nazis in high positions in postwar West Germany was already criticized in the West German media in the late 1950s. There is a host of (very good) late 1950s movies about this very subject. As for former Nazi schoolteachers being reinstated, a few certainly did slip through the net, though the problem was far more severe with judges, the diplomatic corps and the army. But my parents, who both attended school in the immediate postwar era, report that they mostly had very old teachers who had been pulled out of retirement to fill the gap left by the removed Nazi teachers.

Besides, throughout my conscious lifetime I have been constantly reminded in school, in the media, etc… of the atrocities of the Nazis, even though I was born 28 years almost to the day after Hitler’s suicide. Meanwhile, the US completely prefers to forget the fact that the US committed also war crimes in WWII (ditto for the UK and the USSR, who suffer from the same convenient amnesia) and of course in Vietnam and Iraq and Afghanistan. It’s nice that there finally seems to be some processing of the Civil War going in the US – after all, it’s only been 150 years.
