[conventions|repost] Announcing JayCon XIII – only four more days!

ETA: We will be having my living wake, the JayWake on Saturday, July 27th. This will be a celebration of my life and a giant flip of the bird to my death. Including both a wake and a roast. Watch this space for more details.

Every year, some people tell me that I need to announce JayCon early so they can get it in on their calendars. Every year, some people tell me I need to announce JayCon later, because they don’t plan that far ahead. Sometimes, these are the same people. So starting now, and going on through the spring, I will be reposting this announcement with occasional edits or updates as needed.

In celebration of my natal anniversary, JayCon XIII, my 13th annual 37th birthday party, is Saturday, June 15th, 2013 from 2 to 5 pm at the Flying Pie in SE Portland. We’re partying because I was born, and because I have beat cancer again and again and again we may not ever get to do this again.

If you can read this, you’re invited. Prior JayCon experience not required.

Also, if you’re coming from out of town, and you think I might not be aware of that, please contact me. There are some limited capacity extended festivities from Friday to Sunday.

[events|repost] Teaching an online course starting tomorrow

On March 26th through March 28th, I will be doing something new for me. I’m co-teaching an online course from Writers Digest University, The First 10 Pages: Science Fiction & Fantasy Boot Camp: 3/26/13 – 3/28/13. This course on novel beginnings will led by writer (and friend) Phil Athans, with assistance from agent Carlie Webber and myself.

I’ve done a ton of workshopping over the years, and enjoyed it a great deal. I’ve done private critique and mentoring. But I’ve never done online teaching. So this will be a new experience for me. Hopefully a good one for both me and the course participants.

Check it out, if you’re at a career development stage where this might be useful. And if you know anyone who could benefit, pass the word.

[events|repost] Portland’s Inaugural Nerd Nite

This is a repost to remind people of this forthcoming event

On Tuesday, March 26th, I’ll be part of Portland’s inaugural Nerd Nite. Three short talks by people with knowledge and experience in different parts of life. 7 pm at the Mission Theater in NW Portland.

Who Turns You On? with L. Kris Gowen, PhD
Predicting the FUTURE! with Anders Liljeholm
Cancer, Baby, Won’t You Hurry Up My Chimney Tonight? with Jay Lake

Here’s the description of my talk:

Fantasy and science fiction writer Jay Lake has been living with Stage IV metastatic colon cancer for five years and is considered incurable. He talks about the diagnostic process, the experience of life with the disease, and most importantly (to science geeks), the perils and payoffs of being one of the leading edge patients for whole genome sequencing as a diagnostic tool.

If you’re in or around the Portland area that day, come on by and listen in! There’s beer and everything.

[books|repost] Kalimpura reading March 8th, 2013

I’ll be reading from KalimpuraPowell’s | BN ] tonight, Friday, March 8th, at the Powell’s Cedar Hills location. This will be my one and only formal public event for the book due to my continued battle with cancer.

As is usual, I’ll have an open dinner from 5 pm to 6:30 pm, at McMenamins Cedar Hills, at the north end of the same retail complex Powell’s is in. If you’re planning to come to the dinner, please do let me know in comments or via email so I can include you in the headcount.

Due to chemotherapy, I’ve cancelled all my other convention and workshop appearances through this summer (at least), so if you want to see me on the hoof and Hawaiian clad, this is your only chance. Due to the reduced chemotherapy prescription I’m embarking on, this will be the first of a small series of public events and appearances I’ll be doing this spring, and into the summer if my health holds up. Hope to see you there.
