[travel] I’m back; briefly

I’m back at Nuevo Rancho Lake. I failed to blog last night or this morning due to time pressures — worn out last night after dinner and a brief appearance at the Clarion West party, then a fubar this morning when I discovered I’d left my meds in a restaurant. All was solved, and I got a nice bonus breakfast in with bravado111.

Drive home took a little longer than originally planned due to a stop for lunch with kenscholes and jensfire, who live at the diametric opposite end of Portland’s conurbation from me. Since I was more or less passing Scholes Manor on my way to Nuevo Rancho Lake, it was easy enough.

I’m going to mellow now, answer email, do my much-delayed morning Web crawl and link salad, then either take a nap or work on Green. Off to Launch Pad Wednesday, me.

[personal] A grand evening out

Went to dinner with garyomaha, elusivem, tillyjane and the_child at American Dream Pizza. I’m pretty wiped out, so probably shouldn’t have, but the boys are heading back to Nebraska Saturday and it was my last chance to see them.

I bragged, hard, on Jay Lake: Intelligently Redesigned. We’d read a couple of stories in the car on the way over, and just fallen out howling. I nearly ruptured myself laughing at djonn‘s story at the front of the book. I’m way too tired to do a proper job tonight of crediting the perpetrators and photographing the cover, but trust me, this will be a serious cult classic. A lot of people here want copies, but the press seems to be imaginary, at least judging by the 221B Baker Street address, so I’m going to have to petition my connections.

And don’t none of you perps think you’re getting away without signing this for me.

I am so lucky in my friends. Thank you all.

[photos] A very unusual van

Passed this on SE Hawthorne yesterday after getting my hair done. I didn’t have my usual camera with me, so these are phone cam only, sadly. Still, pretty darned funky, both the paint job and the grafted-on 1950s detail elements.

[personal] Father’s Day

So it was a good Father’s Day yesterday, even if I pooped out at 7 pm. Morning with the_child, lunch with Mom and Dad and lillypond (a/k/a the sororal unit), then the almost-impromptu afternoon reading with barthanderson and a cast of dozen, followed by hanging out at the McMenamin’s St. John’s, which turned out to be in an unexpectedly historic building.

Got home around 6:30, passed out around 7:00, slept for about nine hours without any drugs. Whee!

[personal] Taking that midnight train

This afternoon Mother of the Child took Pas de Chat, her cat of 23 years (that is not a typo) to the vet to be put to sleep. After about four years of kitty Alzheimer’s and growing completely deaf, Pas de Chat’s quality of life had dropped precipitously over the past few weeks, with no food or water intake for the past several days.

I went to say good-bye (I’ve known Pas de Chat since 1992) and found myself in tears. I suppose death and dying has become a far more immediate and personal topic than it used to be for me. Mother of the Child and the_child will have a Buddhist ceremony later in the back yard.

Pas de Chat’s final portrait, just before they headed out the door…

[personal] JayCon VIII report

JayCon VIII was a rocking success. Something between 50 and 75 people attended, far too many for me to sensibiy list here. rosefox won the farthest-away virtual prize, followed by the_flea_king and his lovely spouse. Bunch of folks came down from Seattle as well.

Most of all, I was there, alive and kicking. We had music courtesy of jackwilliambell, and stories read aloud in the stead of kenscholes by davidlevine, biomekanic and newroticgirl. Lots of photography was committed, lasirenadolce came up with the cake of a lifetime, and everybody rocked.

Plus we managed a very fine after party at the Alibi, a funky tiki bar in North Portland.

With surely more to come!

[personal] JayCon VIII is today
